By half-way through I was getting the hang of it. Honestly, I was pretty confused for the first quarter of the book or so, because it jumps around so much with very little notice or introduction. Instead it just drops them in your lap as if you were expecting them. But it doesn’t give you those details gently. Over time you’ll find that this book is part fantasy, part science-fiction, and part spy novel.

That’s what I experience sometimes when I read books that are more than a little complicated.Īrcadia, by Iain Pears, fascinated me because of the interwoven plot lines. Have you ever heard a song on the radio, maybe something playing in the background somewhere, and you think it’s one song so in your mind you start following along and anticipating the next note and the rhythm, only to find out a short while later that it’s actually another song altogether? The transition from the one to the other can be jarring. I’ll admit, even though I’m a fairly accomplished reader, I struggle sometimes getting into books.
