After the possessed Ellie disturbingly makes eggs and begins vomiting on the floor, she puts Beth in charge of her children and urges her to not let the demon take her babies. The real Ellie also makes her way through in a few key moments, which is far different from past possessions in the Evil Dead franchise. Evil Dead Rise actually makes her a greatly sympathetic protagonist for her first few scenes in the movie, particularly through her humorous interactions with her kids, complicated relationship with the always-moving Beth, and unfortunate circumstances of her apartment building being condemned shortly after her husband left her to raise their kids alone. The key to making Ellie such a compelling villain in the brutally gory Evil Dead Rise is the humanity given to her beforehand, as Lee Cronin’s film quickly establishes her loving yet sarcastic caretaker role within her family – both to her three children and her sister Beth. In fact, unless The Exorcist reboot or Five Nights at Freddy's can present more thrilling antagonists, it’s unlikely that any upcoming 2023 horror villain will be able to beat the legendary and exhilarating performance of Alyssa Sutherland as Ellie in Evil Dead Rise.
The other notable villains include Cocaine Bear’s titular mama bear and Nicolas Cage’s campy Dracula in Renfield, who still fail to reach the chaotic energy and gory fervor of Evil Dead Rise’s Ellie. Ellie’s greatest competition for 2023 horror villain queen is the robotic M3GAN, whose PG-13 rampage is accompanied by a similar number of hilarious and iconic one-liners. In addition to Evil Dead Rise character Ellie, 2023’s horror slate has already unleashed some great villains that will go down as iconic evils. With stellar reviews and a record-breaking box office performance, Evil Dead Rise is a unique triumph among the slate of modern horror reboots, with its icon-in-the-making approach to the main villain and emotional beats helping it stand out within its own franchise and the larger lexicon of fun horror flicks.
